The Salty Lion
I had this cocktail in NYC at Laser Wolf and HAD to have it again. After messing around with the ingredients, I cracked the code. It toes the line between sweet and savory, and should definitely be in your summer drink rotation. See how it’s made here.
Ingredients, Makes 2
4 oz strained grapefruit juice
A palmful of mint leaves, plus a few for garnish
1 tsp agave syrup or simple syrup
2 oz gin
1.5 oz Arak
Ice
2 pinches salt
2 grapefruit slices for garnish
*optional: soda water to make it even more refreshing
For the rim
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp grapefruit zest
Make it!
On a small plate, mix together the salt, sugar, and grapefruit zest. Using a pastry brush (or your finger) paint a small dot of agave syrup on the side of the glass. Roll into the salty sugar and put glasses into the freezer.
In a cocktail shaker, muddle your grapefruit juice, mint and agave syrup for 20 seconds. Add gin, Arak, salt, and ice. Shake vigorously until frosty on the outside, about 30 seconds.
Remove glasses from freezer and fill with fresh ice. Strain the cocktail shaker over the ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and a grapefruit wedge. Optional: top with soda water to make it even more refreshing. Cheers!
